Whew! Farming just got some impressive earthworks. I look forward to our class starting and more coverage of the farm’s progress.

  • NickJ says:

The keyway is compacted clay correct? What is the difference between the 36″ above the slab and the rest of the keyway?
    Thanks,
    Nick

  • Jake Robinson says:

So, the water that flows downhill will just flow like a stream to a lower pond or will you run pipe all the way down to your livestock?

  • Jorja E says:

Impressive baffle! Looks like the same stuff trenchplates are made from, eh? How far from the farm did we have to range to find someone with those welding skills?

    • The first place we found was about 45 minutes out. They were a larger operation but ended up taking far too long and ended up costing us extra days of waiting. That meant I had to keep the earth-movers busy for those days. To keep them busy I had them build three small livestock ponds and work on livestock lane ways and widening areas so that we could get around corners with a tractor with chicken trailers behind it.
The second place we found was a smaller operation but had great service and was only 20 minutes away. I gave them the measurements and they welded off site. They then delivered the pipe with baffle attached and did the final cuts.
We have a welder on site (Jesse Tegtmeier) but I wanted something with a warranty backing the work incase we ran into a leak.

I’m very excited to see the first videos by PE, but I am having a bit of trouble finding the source of the super secret squirrel password. Is there any chance I could get a lead on where to look?

We are beta testing (or test screening if you will) content for the PermaEthos.tv site. At present it is only available to the PermaEthos Founding Members and the additional 300 people enrolled in Class One. If you fall under either of those categories, you would have been sent the password. We are building an inventory of entertaining and informative programing, and will let everyone know as soon as we open it up to subscribers.

If you are in the first class for the PDC and didn’t receive the password, email jack at thesurvivalpodcast.com and he will hook you up.

Awesome quality! A lot more of these coming our way?! yep, I’m excited!

  • Gary says:

Excellent video quality and work guys.

  • jamendjr says:

Great quick overview and very nice video quality! I know there will be longer and more detailed explanations of the earthworks later, looking forward to it. I am sure there are a few folks watching this with a million questions running through their heads…like what the heck is a keyway? I would say, google is your friend until the official final video’s come out. You guys have a monumental task on your hands. Seeing actual video and photo’s of what will be presented in the PDC online will be revolutionary in this cottage industry. I would also say thanks for the access to future video’s with new content and quality, thats fantastic and much appreciated.

  • Eric says:

Great video, I really like these where someone is explaining stuff. This one is still way over my head though. So hopefully just a few questions to clarify things. What is a keyway? The best I could find on the Internet was it is essentially the foundation of the dam wall? Is an alternative to this system to just dig a giant hole with very shallowly sloped sides, compact the bottom and ridge, and use a siphon or electric pump? I get that those are not without problems, but to help my understanding, is all this work for the keyway and dam to allow a valve to be put near the bottom of the pond for purely gravity-fed water? Or would a keyway and dam still be required in a simple sloped pond?

I would love to see the videos and I am a founding member but I did not get the password

  • fathersdilemma says:

Nice pictures and explanation of civil construction, but I don’t think you explained what a keyway is or the purpose and importance of the baffle plate.

    • Reconnoiter says:

Yeah, sorry about that. Think of a keyway as a foothold for the material that makes up the dam. It’s a grove in the ground that gives the dam something to hold on to. Otherwise, the entire dam could slide down the hill in one piece. There are much better explanations available in Google Search.

A baffle plate stops any water that might work its way along the pipe (on the pond side) from getting all the way through the dam.
